Travel of America President & CEO, Richard Molander, recently traveled on the new Norwegian Epic.

Earlier this month I had the pleasure to attend the Norwegian Epic’s inaugural cruise event in Miami. It was a 2-night cruise to nowhere full of excitement, with many surprises, and so much to do I could hardly see or do everything. What an amazing ship!

Norwegian Cruise Line has clearly raised the bar for every other ship out there today with their entertainment. It was the best I have ever experienced at sea, bar none! Imagine starting the night with dinner and dancing at the sophisticated Manhattan Club, and then taking in the hysterical and magical Blue Man Group show. If you are unwilling to end your evening on the town early, make your way to Fat Cat for an incredible live blues concert. Still on a roll? Then head for the incredible dueling pianos of Howl at the Moon!

Perhaps the next night you’ll retire earlier… and given the layout of the deck plan, you’ll find your stateroom peaceful and quiet. It’s all up to you!

Just what’s so special about the entertainment aboard the Epic? First of all, there are no large Broadway shows in the theaters. Large scale entertainment simply does not exist, but instead, there are smaller branded venues with exciting choices like:

Blue Man Group – excellent! From its beginnings in Boston these 3 men, faces painted blue, execute a professional performance that is both humorous and mysterious – no charge.

Second City Comedy Troupe – so funny! With its roots in Chicago where the birth of Jim Belushi, Gilda Radner & Dan Aykroyd occurred, this is improv comedy at its best – no charge.

Legends in Concert – Star-studded lineup including Madonna, Elvis, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Brittany Spears and more! Legends is performed in the Manhattan Club, which is a New York Supper Club with dining and dancing – no surcharge.

Cirque Dreams & Dinner – wonderful! Dinner with 2 hours of entertainment, it is perfect for adults and families. Surcharge - $15 pp or $20 pp preferred seating.

Howl at the Moon - world's greatest rock 'n' roll Dueling Pianos Show at Sea – no surcharge.

You can pre-reserve your shows at NCL’s website 45 days before departure, and although you have the option to reserve them from the TV in your stateroom or at the box office on board the ship, do it online. You’ll get the best selection! Additionally, there are many excellent musicians, lounges, and dancing venues (Spice H2O nightclub under the stars), not to mention the first Icebar at Sea ($20 surcharge with 2 drinks included).

After experiencing the Norwegian Epic first-hand, it is clear that this ship does have something for everyone. For families, there are staterooms that sleep up to six, and the ship has dedicated areas just for kids and teens, not to mention Norwegian’s exclusive Nickelodeon at Sea. Spa lovers are in for a treat with the new Spa Accommodations that offer calming spa décor and entry to the incredible Thermal Suites. And solo travelers finally have the perfect option with the new Studio accommodations and the Studio Lounge, designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind.

The shopping, the huge, beautiful fitness center and spa, the bars, the largest water park at sea, all the entertainment options – it’s just amazing that there can be so much on one ship! And, thanks to Freestyle Cruising, Norwegian offers the freedom to create a completely individual style of vacation. Relaxing or adventurous, all dressed up or resort casual, and never a fixed schedule or restriction to force the pace—it’s the perfect vacation.

                                                          --Richard Molander

And it only gets better— after her debut in the Caribbean, the Epic is going to Europe for the Summer of 2011.

One of the things I absolutely love to do when I visit Europe is to take long walks along the many beautiful boulevards that make the Old World so unique and special. My strolls are usually unplanned, and I just let my feet point me in the right direction.

Climbing the narrow stairway to the top of Monte Tiberio on the island of Capri to view the ruins of the Roman Emperor Tiberius' villa, a tiny restaurant with just three or four small outdoor tables crossed my path. I will never forget the incredible views of the cliffs below and glittering waters of the Mediterranean beyond as I dined in the morning sunlight on a simple lunch of spaghetti alle vongole and a glass of home-made wine.

As one of Oceania Cruises top-selling travel partners and a founding member of the line’s prestigious Connoisseur’s Club of elite travel agency partners, Travel of America was honored recently to attend a special “reveal” in Beverly Hills for the cruise line’s exciting new ship, Marina, currently under construction in Genoa, Italy and slated to sail her inaugural voyage in January 2011. Attending the gala event were Pat Boskovic, Senior Cruise and Tour Specialist; Jim Petzel, VP, Marketing; and President & CEO, Richard Molander.

In conceptualizing the new Marina, the team at Oceania took as their inspiration today’s concept of ‘home’ being a sanctuary and nesting place, a refuge where friends and family come together to relax, re-charge and renew.

Indeed, aboard Marina comfort has been elevated to new heights with the addition of furnishings in the owner’s suite from the Ralph Lauren Home Collection, while the prestigious New York design firm, Dakota Jackson, has been selected to furnish the Vista and Oceania suites. Guests in other stateroom categories will enjoy larger, more luxurious accommodations with the finest high-end home furnishings.

While Marina is larger than Regatta, Insignia and Nautica, and she carries almost double the number of guests – 1,258 – Travel of America Customers can rest assured that the fabulous cruise experience they enjoyed on the other ships will not be compromised aboard Marina.

As Chairman and CEO, Frank Del Rio, explained, “There is an 80% increase in passenger capacity on Marina, but a 120% increase in the size of the ship, so the size makes for a more comfortable ship. The guest-to-space ratio is much higher on Marina than on our existing vessels.” Additionally, Frank pointed out that the crew-to-passenger ratio on board Marina has also been significantly increased.

With all that comfort on board to create a memorable cruise, Oceania has also taken a thoughtful approach to dining on Marina – equally important to an outstanding cruise experience in the eyes of guests. Jeff Drew, Senior VP of Sales, commented on how Oceania consistently delivers such a phenomenal dining experience (which Travel of America Customers continually rave about), “It’s no secret in the cruise industry that Oceania outspends every other cruise line in the business in the area of food for its guests.” And he insisted that Marina will follow in that tradition by offering the finest dining at sea for guests.

Travel of America Customers who sail aboard the new Marina will enjoy the hallmarks of the Oceania Cruises dining experience – the Grand Dining Room; the clubby Polo Grill, home to the finest 28-day dry-aged prime steaks; and Toscana, where cherished Italian family recipes, lovingly handed-down through generations, are recreated each evening.

In addition, Marina adds two new signature restaurants for guests to enjoy. Red Ginger will feature the bold flavors of the Orient, and guests will dine in contemporary elegance in a setting surrounded by six crystal Buddhas. Bob Binder, President of Oceania Cruises, stated that the acclaimed Slanted Door restaurant in San Francisco is currently consulting with the cruise line in developing Red Ginger’s menus.

The other exciting new dining venue is Jacques, world-renowned chef Jacques Pepin’s eponymous and first-ever restaurant at sea. Here, in surroundings that reflect the provencal countryside of France, guests will dine on Jacques Pepin’s classic and distinctive dishes. Jacques himself will contribute to the décor of the room by featuring some his personal copper pans and other mementos from the celebrated “Julia & Jacques” television series.

Also announced, an exciting onboard art enrichment series in the ship’s Artist’s Loft where guests can attend classes in oil painting, watercolors or sculpture taught by a resident artist. Across the hall, guests can partake in a hands-on cooking school taught by chefs who will provide their unique insights.

While Marina’s first five sailings sold out in record time, Travel of America still has limited space set aside for our Customers on the ship’s TransAtlantic, Panama Canal and Exotic Caribbean voyages. And this week, the line will open the books to reservations for the remainder of Marina’s inaugural year sailings in Europe.

Editor's Note: Travel of America's Jim Petzel muses on a few of his favorite discoveries and experiences during a visit to the elegant city of water and bridges, Venice.

One of the most captivating and beautiful cities in the world has to be Venice. Built on 118 separate islands, this noble Italian city charms visitors with its many faces – just like the elaborate masks worn by Venetians through the ages to celebrate Carnevale, the festival prior to the start of the Lenten penitential season.

St. Mark’s Square is the historic center of Venice and a good starting point for any exploration of the city. Monumental St. Mark’s Basilica awes visitors with its gilded mosaics, a nod to the Byzantine world. After all, Venice was positioned as the crossroads of trade between West and East.

Adjoining the cathedral is the gothic Doge’s Palace, the seat of government during the days when Venice was a republic. View the elaborately apppointed receiving rooms to gain insight into this city’s commanding place in history. After sipping a cappuccino at a sidewalk café in the enormous piazza, you can admire the exquisite work of Venetian craftsmen on display in the shops along the loggia. On the nearby island of Murano, incredible hand-blown glass creations are brought to life.

From St. Mark’s Square you can easily take a stroll along the Grand Canal to view the ornate palazzi of the Venetian nobility. With their balcony doors open to the morning sun, you’ll catch a glimpse of ornate interiors and imagine life as it was. Or better yet, indulge your romantic side and let charming gondoliers serenade you on a regal trip along the canal to Rialto bridge.

After a luncheon of Venetian specialties blending traditional Italian recipes with the flavors of eastern spices, you may opt for a quiet stroll. You’ll also discover more facets of bella Venezia as you walk from St. Mark’s Square to Piazzale Roma on the mainland side of the city. Getting lost is inevitable and has never been quite so enjoyable! As you make your way down the maze of narrow streets, the crowds of tourists begin to thin, until quite suddenly, you find yourself alone in tiny, tranquil neighborhoods, each one displaying its own character.

Here you will discover school children in their uniforms playing ball in a large square and mothers shopping at the local market for this evening’s dinner. Craftsmen ply their trades in their workshops and grandmothers keep a close eye on rambunctious toddlers. Once you arrive at Piazzale Roma you can mingle with the Venetians on a leisurely ride aboard a vaparetto, a ‘water bus’ to return to St. Mark’s Square.

For other sides of Venice, take a ride to the island of Burano with its colorfully decorated houses and where the locals still practice lacemaking by hand. Art lovers will enjoy a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection which includes a fine selection of works by Kandinsky, Klee, Picasso, Dali and other masters, while a short train ride from Venice, the city of Ravenna boasts impressive Byzantine mosaics at the Basilica of Sant’ Apollinari in Clase.

Billed by Royal Caribbean as a place to soothe mind, body and soul, this state-of-the-art facility – arguably the largest at sea – designed for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, combines the most advanced spa and anti-aging therapies, the latest fitness equipment and even healthy dining options. At the breezy spa café I began my day sipping a strawberry smoothie (with extra protein powder to both bulk up and slim down) followed by a fresh fruit, Greek yogurt and nut parfait. Healthy snacks, juices and nutritious entrees round out the menu.

Couples can share the pampering experience in one of the spa’s many couples massage suites, plus there’s an entire area for teens and kids to enjoy specially catered services. Oasis’ Vitality spa also offers medi-spa enhancements including Botox, Restylane and Perlane cosmetic therapies, acupuncture and advanced tooth whitening treatments. A hair salon with the Elemis line of products complements the wide range of facilities.

At the center of the spa’s treatment area lies the Thermal Suite. Here you can find bliss and contentment as you take in a selection of aromatic steam rooms and sauna. Just outside are heated loungers, perfect for relaxing before or after your treatment.

To my surprise, the Fitness Center rivaled the gym where I work out at home – LA Fitness – with an impressive array of resistance equipment and free weights. For cardio, I could choose from banks of treadmills, recumbent bikes and elliptical crosstrainers. Spinning enthusiasts will find a dedicated area featuring well over two dozen bikes. You can also join optional classes in kickboxing, yoga and Pilates.

A stairway from the fitness center led one deck below to a covered jogging/walking track with rubber flooring that encircled the perimeter of the ship and offered stunning views from both sides and aft. (The embarkation deck area also doubles as the staging platform for the ship’s eighteen rescue craft which, unlike other vessels, do not need to be lowered into position for boarding.) Motivational slogans incorporated into the bulkheads above your head challenge you onward to complete each lap.

Feeling pumped up from the protein in my breakfast smoothie, I opted for a Kinesis class to tone my body and strengthen my muscles. Our instructor, Devin, who hailed from England and helped to set up the Fitness Center on the TransAtlantic crossing from the shipyard in Finland, informed us that Kinesis, a whole new way to work out, is slowly being introduced aboard cruise ships, and that we would be some of the first to participate in this new form of training which increases the body’s strength, endurance, flexibility and mobility.

Utilizing equipment similar to the Total Gym, endorsed by Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley, Devin led nine of us through a series of toning and sculpting exercises utilizing fluid, natural movements which focused on all areas of the body – legs, thighs, back, shoulders, chest and arms, even the neck.

Based on resistance and gravity technology – not weights – the equipment’s rotating pulleys and cables gave me an incredible work out plus unrestricted body movement. Just minutes into the class, I was huffing and puffing and sweating more than I had since my P.E. classes – several lifetimes ago – but I felt inspired to persevere knowing that Kinesis exercise burns 30% more calories than traditional machines.
After class, I thanked Devin for his encouragement and advice, but when he asked me if I would like to join the class again the next morning, I demurred. After all, being a good travel agent, there was so much more of the incredible Oasis of the Seas I just had to uncover – like the uber-chic Solarium – so that I might share more of my experiences aboard this revolutionary ship with you!

Travel of America has been privileged to collaborate with KFI AM640’s award-winning host, Bill Handel, for close to ten years, orchestrating his popular cruises for his listening audience. It’s been two years since Bill’s last listener trip to the Black Sea.

Bill and his wife, Marjorie, are avid travelers, and recently they made the decision to take their sojourns in a new direction for 2010. We’re pleased to inform you that they are inviting their friends and listeners to join them on a fabulous cruise along the scenic Rhine river from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, this coming July 15-25, 2010.

You may be asking yourself, What makes a cruise with Bill Handel so special? We recently caught up with Bill who had this to say (as only Bill knows how!) “We travel together, we eat together, we hang out together, and we constantly talk about each other behind everyone’s back… all together, too much fun!!”

Truth be told, Bill and Marjorie look forward to meeting each and every one of their friends and listeners who join them on this special adventure (whether it’s your first time or you're one of their longtime “travel buddies”), and you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with them and other KFI AM640 listeners throughout the trip at festive dinners and informal get-togethers which we’ve arranged exclusively for you. (You’ll also find Bill to be out and about on his listener cruises – whether he’s sightseeing on a tour, enjoying a Coke in the lounge, or taking in the incredible river views from the Sun Deck.)

Travel of America has carefully selected for your river journey Avalon Felicity, a deluxe vessel built for Avalon Waterways just this year. Unlike the mega-ships, your river ship carries just 138 special guests in comfort and style. On board, there’s a casual vibe that prevails both day and night. What’s more, there are no long lines or waiting.

Making your away around the ship is a breeze. You’ll discover a fine restaurant and at the front of the ship, a panoramic lounge with large picture windows which offer commanding views of the passing scenery along the Rhine from three sides. We guarantee you’ll be mesmerized by the sights – from towering castles that date back to medieval times and vine-clad hills growing Germany’s prized Riesling grapes to neat villages and cosmopolitan cities.

What makes river cruising so captivating is the bond that develops between you and the river along with the surrounding countryside. The result – a robust vacation experience that will be both uniquely personal and memorable. When Avalon Felicity arrives at its destination for the day, it will usually dock right in the center of town. The ramp is put down and you can step off to explore and get back on with ease.

Let’s say, for example, after having toured Amsterdam by day, you make your way back to the ship to meet up with friends over dinner. Afterwards, all of you decide to return to the city to stroll along some of the magical tree-lined canals that are illuminated in the evening. In a matter of minutes, you can find yourself at a sidewalk café in Dam Square among the locals, enjoying coffee or a glass of wine.

Are you ready to join Bill and Marjorie Handel and friends on this wonderful cruise next summer? For all the details, click here. Then call one of Travel of America’s professional Consultants who will be happy to answer your questions and assist you in securing your place on board. But don’t wait – space is selling out quickly on this popular cruise, and you don’t want to miss out!

Travel of America's Jim Petzel files another report on his recent trip to Florida to cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's brand new Oasis of the Seas.

When I first stepped aboard Oasis, I made my way to the Windjammer Marketplace on Deck 16 to grab a quick lunch. Besides a wide variety of popular dishes – from soups, salads, entrees, and Asian dishes to burgers and fries and just-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies, cheesecakes, and pies, this signature Royal Caribbean venue also offers spectacular ocean views, along with my first glimpse of the Boardwalk and AquaTheater below plus the Sports Deck.

Some guests were already trying out the Zip Line and watching them fly over the Boardwalk as I savored my spaghetti a la carbonara and a glass of chardonnay, I figured I was up for the challenge. Bring it on! I can handle this – after all, I am now a citizen of Royal Caribbean’s nation of “Why Not!”

So I immediately headed off to take flight. But before I could make my maiden flight, there were a couple of things I had to do. The first was to sign a waiver which would cover my use of both the Zip Line and Flowrider. This is something you can do online before you even leave home. I would suggest you do this because it saves time when you get to the ship.

Next, I had to book an appointment. Currently, you cannot walk up to the Zip Line and ride. You can only go off at your appointed day and time. Again, I would suggest that you make your Zip Line reservations when you board the ship. Royal Caribbean is committed to making sure everyone who wants to ride is able to do so, however, because this is such a popular attraction, it makes sense to book right away and also to schedule your ride during the earlier part of the cruise when demand may be somewhat less.

You should also know that the Zip Line cannot operate when it rains, it’s windy outside, or at night. And finally, you must wear dry pants (don’t go from FlowRider to Zip Line), shoes and socks (no flip flops), you cannot have anything in your pockets, and glasses or sunglasses are not permitted.

So I returned to Deck 16 at my appointed time, once again pumped up and ready for my debut. This time I entered the staging area for the Zip Line where I was suited up in a full body harness and given a helmet. Three attendants checked and re-checked the harness, tightened all the straps and gave me the low-down on what was about to happen. (The process takes about ten minutes.) It was then that my bravado began to weaken - slightly.

The staging area for the zip line is right along the edge of the deck overlooking the Boardwalk, which when I timidly glanced down, now appeared to be not nine decks but several miles below. The carousel looked so tiny, and the people maybe measured an inch tall. I began to harbor thoughts that maybe this was not such a good idea, what had I gotten myself into, and perhaps I should turn back…. But then I surmised that I couldn’t make a quick exit because I was already strapped into the harness and it would take another 10 minutes to get out of it.

I kept making my way to the launch platform and tried not to look down, but by now my palms were starting to sweat. As I saw the grip bars which I was to hold on to moving into position, I thought, What if my hands slip? Would I be left to dangle above the Boardwalk for everyone in Windjammer to see?

I didn’t have any more time to speculate my fate because it was my turn to launch. I was secured to the line and after some (repeated) coaching from the attendant, my body assumed a sitting position, the bar was raised, I lifted my legs, and I was off, racing 82 feet diagonally over the open air atrium of the Boardwalk.

Honestly, I did not scream. I looked down just once but then looked back up right away because it all happened in less than a minute, and by now I was preparing for landing – getting my legs and feet into position to brake my flight.

All too soon, the attendant at the other end of the line caught me and my solo flight was over. My knees were a little wobbly and my heart was pumping as I made my way back to the staging area to return the gear. But I also felt exhilarated and a tingling rush at having conquered the world’s first zip line at sea aboard Oasis. And so I proudly made my way to Flowrider to face my next challenge of the day. But that’s another story.

Travel of America's VP, Marketing, Jim Petzel, recently returned from a preview sailing over Thanksgiving aboard the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's new Oasis of the Seas, which you may have read about in newspapers and seen on TV. His report on the ship follows:

Royal Caribbean’s brand new Oasis of the Seas elevates cruising to an entirely new level. This revolutionary ship transforms the cruise to a complete vacation experience at sea, and I would even venture to call it a “floating resort.” Now, you’ve probably heard ships being referred to as 'floating resorts' before, but Oasis of the Seas is the real deal. This ship delivers an exceptional vacation experience for everyone – from couples and multi-generational families traveling with kids and grandparents to active seniors.

Because of the vessel's incredible size and abundance in all areas – accommodations, onboard activities, dining and entertainment – Oasis can offer a wide variety of choice never before seen in allowing guests to craft a unique vacation experience based on their own preferences, and such Oasis represents an exciting cutting-edge product for you.

Getting Around

Navigating the ship did not present a challenge, as Oasis’ layout roughly follows that of the Voyager and Freedom-class vessels. Public rooms, including among others the Schooner Bar, Champagne Bar, the new Rising Tide bar, Boleros (salsa dancing and great mojitos), Crown and Atlas pub, Sorrento’s pizzeria, Promenade and Mondo cafés and boutique shops, all are located on both sides of a significantly wider, longer, brighter and more spacious Royal Promenade which now features large skylights or ‘Crystal Canopies’ that open to Central Park and flood natural light into the Royal Promenade, as well as give guests in Central Park a bird’s eye view of the action below. At one end of the mall is the three-level Opus Dining Room, while at the other is the large Opal Theater where Hairspray and in-house production shows are staged nightly.

There are elevator banks at both ends of the Royal Promenade with plenty of elevators so there were never any long waits. Because the ship is so spacious and because of the multitude of lounges, dining and entertainment venues located throughout all areas of the vessel, with 4,500 guests on board my sailing, the ship never felt crowded.

Staterooms

I stayed in a Balcony stateroom overlooking the Central Park neighborhood. The Balcony staterooms are the same whether they are located in Central Park or Boardwalk or offer sea views. Royal Caribbean has re-designed the very comfortable staterooms so that they are larger at 182 sq. feet with a slightly new floor plan. Because the closets have been moved from the front entry to a new location parallel to the bed, this has enabled the bathrooms to be enlarged. Bathrooms feature a shower that even has a bar in the lower corner for ladies to shave their legs. (The amount of detail on this ship is incredible!)

I enjoyed moments of relaxing on a large couch and watching a flat screen TV housed in the multi-function desk/vanity which also features hair dryer and minibar. A queen-size bed dressed with a soft duvet, upgraded linens and bed skirt completes the room. There is very good closet space along with plenty of drawers and shelves in the staterooms. The colors in the staterooms reflect the new palette which Royal Caribbean has chosen for the ship – soothing contemporary tones of aqua and moss plus birch-tone wood along with silver and black accents.

As you select your stateroom, here are some points to consider:

Staterooms are divided into four color-coded quadrants on the ship. In addition, Boardwalk and Central Park staterooms offer guests engagement with their respective neighborhoods. Just like living in a downtown urban area or sitting at a sidewalk café, from your balcony you can look down on the activities unfolding in Central Park and Boardwalk. You’ll see people out for a stroll amid the lush landscaping or having a drink at an outdoor bar. You can watch the dazzling carousel as it whirls, and also take in the music and activities happening on the open decks above.

In Central Park there is also a Scottish bagpiper dressed in a kilt who makes his rounds through the neighborhood about 5:30 or so each evening to signal the end of the day. (I guarantee you will hear him whether you are sitting on the balcony or resting in your room with the sliding door closed!) Boardwalk-view staterooms will also take in the sound from AquaTheater performances.

Looking across from your balcony (62 feet to be exact!) you will spy other balcony staterooms. If you are looking for sea views and more privacy, I would recommend balcony accommodations overlooking the ocean.

Oasis of the Seas is the perfect ship for families. There is a variety of staterooms designed just for families, including a new Family Stateroom with Balcony that sleeps up to six. At 271 sq. feet, it offers plenty of closet and storage space plus a large open floor area where the kids can spread out and play games. Mom and Dad share a comfortable queen-size bed, while the kids have their own bunk beds with storage “lockers” just for their stuff. A sofa in the room converts to a double.

Also for families – a Family Inside and Ocean View stateroom (those at the front of the ship offer extra floor space since the wall of the room with the window slants forward to follow the ship’s exterior contour). Don’t overlook the spacious Royal Family Suite with Balcony that accommodates up to eight guests.

Taking their inspiration from the high-rise condos that line the Miami shoreline, Royal Caribbean has introduced 28 Loft Suites. Located in a private area at the top of the ship (Decks 17 & 18) at the aft end, and offering concierge service and access to a private Concierge Lounge, each two-deck high accommodation offers stunning sea views through soaring walls of glass, and several corner units also overlook the outdoor AquaTheater. Ranging from 545 sq. feet to 1,524 sq. feet and accommodating up to 14 guests, the lofts are executed in shades of teal, celery and chocolate, with accents of brushed silver and black and radiate a hip but comfortable vibe.

Each suite contains living and dining areas, plus large outdoor balcony (corner units have wraparound balconies), stairway to loft level, a master loft sleeping area, plus lavish master bathroom (some with double whirlpool tubs and double showers) and guest bedrooms/bathrooms, depending on size of suite. For a larger family group, I would recommend these loft suites.

In my next entry, I’ll review my heart-pounding experiences with the Zip Line and FlowRider plus the Vitality Spa and give you the low-down on what you need to know to get the most from these popular onboard attractions.

I get questions all the time on packing tips. Because I travel so much, people assume I’m an expert on packing. I’m learning, but I’m certainly no expert. I make the same mistake as everyone else -- I pack too much and say a few choice words because my suitcase is too heavy to carry.

When my children were growing up, and packing for a trip, they used to ask me all the time, “Mom, can I take ‘this’ or ‘that’ with me on the trip?” My answer was always the same. “You can take whatever you want, as long as you can carry it.” My daughters, now young women, remember those words and repeat them back to me quite often, particularly when I can’t pick up my own suitcase because I over packed

I recently read an article in our trade magazine ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents) that had some good pointers that might prove useful when packing for future trips. It is particularly important now when most airlines are charging for checked luggage. Cutting down is the name of the game.

Make a packing list so you don’t forget anything. This list could also help with repacking -- not to forget anything hanging behind the bathroom door or a pair of shoes under the bed. Also, if you are one of those unfortunate few who have their luggage lost or stolen, you have a list of the contents for insurance purposes.

Think about where you’re going and plan your wardrobe accordingly. Are you going on a bicycle trip through France, a luxury cruise in the Mediterranean, or a business meeting in Chicago or river rafting in Colorado? Consider the events you will participate in, both day and night, and write down what you will need for the different activities. Crosscheck your packing list to see if one piece can be worn with more than one outfit. Pick clothes that coordinate well together.

Over the years my wardrobe is basically black, with colorful accessories. Black hides a multitude of sins, and it also matches my shoes. I try hard to get away with two pairs of shoes: shoes for walking and a pair of sandals or flats to change into for the evening. Depending on the trip, I may include my hiking boots.

Since I often have to carry my own suitcase, I long ago stopped packing an outfit for every occasion. Also, since most of my trips are over two weeks, I have started using the hotel ‘s laundry facilities. It can get expensive, but it sure beats packing 14 different outfits. I always pack a windbreaker with a hood and a jacket/sweater. For outdoor activities I layer my clothes to be prepared for cooler weather.

By making a list, I have a good idea what I want to take. Next, I start laying everything out in my guestroom. Actually, I may start a week before the trip and when I remember something, I put it with the other items. Once everything is laid out, I go over my itinerary again and try to eliminate what I think I can live without.

Over the years I have tried folding my clothes, layering my clothes, and using those space-saver airtight bags. The article I just read suggests ironing everything first, then button all buttons, zip all zippers and fold your clothes like they do in the stores. Also, using a piece of tissue paper when folding your clothes helps prevent wrinkling. That seems like a lot of work to me. Again, check your itinerary and think chronologically, placing the items to be worn first on the top. Eliminate wasted space by possibly rolling t-shirts or putting socks and underwear in the insides of shoes.

Several months ago I found a great travel bag at a container store. This bag can be folded flat and has at least 15 pockets of different shapes and sizes. I have my toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, make-up, tweezers, aspires, band-aids, body lotion, liquid soap, deodorant, sunscreen, hair gel, hair spray, etc. This bag always stays packed and after each trip, I refill everything. Now, with the new rules about carrying liquids on board, I put this travel bag in my checked luggage.

Thank goodness for digital cameras. Not having to pack rolls and rolls of film saves me lots of room in my carry-on. I do pack my camera accessories, i.e. a battery charger and lenses and even my laptop computer in my carry-on. I used to carry a corkscrew, a Swiss army knife and razor in the bag, but that is now packed separately in my checked baggage and stays in the suitcase to be used on my next trip. I also keep a small umbrella and rain cape packed, just in case.

As for jewelry, leave the flashy stuff at home. Once again, it depends on where you’re going. In most deluxe hotels and on cruise ships, there is a safe in the room (or cabin), and expensive jewelry can be locked up. If you are going to a third word country, where there is lots of poverty, I definitely would leave my good jewelry home. It doesn’t pay to advertise, or better yet, don’t take what you don’t want to lose.

Always carry travel documents, medications, jewelry and your passport in your carry-on luggage. Label each piece of luggage, inside and out, with your name and telephone number, not your address. I actually put my business card in my luggage tag. Remove old airline tags to avoid confusion. I carry my passport, credit cards and cash on my body, in a holder that fits around my neck. There are several different types of travel holders that fit around your waist or under your arm. Find one that is comfortable for you and if there is not a safe in your room, I’d definitely carry my passport, cash and credit cards with me.

Throughout the years I have learned lots of tricks that make traveling a little easier. I always carry extra zip-lock plastic bags for a wet bathing suit or a bottle of lotion that might leak. I also use disposable shower caps to cover my shoes to protect my clothes. I bring pre-addressed labels that I can stick on postcards. I pack one or two wire coat hangers for drying clothes. I always carry a small bottle of anti-bacterial soap in my pocket.

If you have helpful hints on packing or information you’ve gathered over the years that could prove helpful, please let me know. I’ll gladly pass on your information.

    Have a great trip.

Sailing the Rhine from <city></city>Basel to <city></city>Amsterdam, the Avalon Tapestry was our home for eight nights, stopping along the way at port cities like <city></city>Strasbourg, <city></city>Heidelberg, Rudensheim, <city></city>Koblenz, and <city></city><place></place>Cologne.

I must say things have changed in a big way since our agency, Travel of America, first started selling this niche product in the early ‘80s – long before the days of Avalon Waterways and other river cruise companies. Back then, most ships were eastern European, often from <country-region></country-region>Bulgaria or <country-region></country-region><place></place>Russia. We had great success with chartering a Bulgarian ship during the summer months each year, usually on the <place></place>Rhine. The <place></place>Danube was popular, too.

The river cruise ships were much different from today’s fleet. The vessels were much smaller with less public space. Most of the activities were on the top deck. Cabins – they could hardly be called “staterooms” back then – were tiny with bunk beds. Usually only the cruise director spoke English. The sightseeing was different too, mainly simple walking tours through the towns and villages. But, once our customers knew what the river experience was like, they loved it and we sold a lot of the product.

Fast forward to today. River cruising is indeed a hot product. And, after reconnecting with it last month on the Avalon Tapestry, I can understand why. For me, one of the best parts of this river cruise experience was its intimacy. I loved the small ship, few passengers, and the family feel on board. Within a few days you knew or at least recognized fellow guests and nearly all the Tapestry crew knew you – and often your preferences. I also loved sleeping in the comfortable stateroom with the sliding glass doors open, being lulled to sleep by the lazy lapping of the river on the hull.

Compared to ocean cruising, river cruising is much more destination oriented and I liked the Avalon Tapestry’s sailing and docking schedule that gave you plenty of time to fully experience each locale. In fact, one night around midnight I even got off the ship in <city></city><place></place>Cologne to get a close-up of the towering gothic cathedral that dominated the river’s skyline. A quick 10-minute walk and there I was, just me and the cathedral. It was breathtaking.

Avalon Waterways gets an A+ in my book when it comes to hiring a very personable and efficient staff. And Hans, the cruise director – well, I’ve never seen anything quite like him. He walked a fine line in being friendly yet firm in getting guests to follow his instructions. Everyone loved Hans – he’s a true asset to the Globus family of brands. Also related to staff – the local guides were top-notch, too. The company has done a bang up job selecting tour guides who are so knowledgeable - but more importantly, they're full of info that is enlightening AND memorable. I wouldn’t think twice about bringing my two daughters along on a trip like this and they’re both under 10. The learning experience for them at such a relaxed pace would be awesome.
